Study Books
Books support study alongside prayer. The cited Jewish architectural guide describes a Torah library, often housed in the synagogue. This model uses a study table and illustrative scroll as its learning marker; it does not show the library shelves. Deuteronomy 6:6–9 calls for teaching God’s words throughout daily life.
Perspective note
Comparative historical/source study. The original author's or church's reception is retained; inclusion does not make every claim Oriental Orthodox teaching.
Key points
- Learning extends beyond a single gathering.
- Look for: A study table with an illustrative scroll near the entrance; library shelves are not modeled.
- Illustrated location: Entrance & Learning
- The Old Testament does not provide a synagogue blueprint. This selective model illustrates later Jewish furnishings for study, not a reconstruction of an Old Testament building or a complete plan of any congregation. The central bimah and separate front amud reflect one Ashkenazi arrangement; Sephardic and other communities differ. The ark curtain and eternal light also vary by custom. A separate vestibule, full Torah library, and the mechitzah used in Orthodox Jewish congregations are not illustrated. Dimensions, stonework, columns, seating, and decorative profiles are schematic.
- From hearing the Word to thanksgiving (Historical connection): Justin describes a Sunday gathering with readings, teaching, prayers, bread and wine, thanksgiving, Communion, and provision for those absent. This provides an early witness to a Word-and-Eucharist sequence that still shapes the Divine Liturgy.
- Justin does not describe the full later Byzantine rite. Modern synagogue worship continues its own Jewish life and should not be presented as an incomplete Christian service.
- Passover, Pascha, and Pentecost (Scripture): Leviticus 23 orders Israel’s feasts; Acts 2 places the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. Paul calls Christ our Passover in 1 Corinthians 5. Orthodox Pascha and Pentecost celebrate Christ’s Resurrection and the Spirit’s coming within the church year.
- Jewish Passover and Shavuot remain living Jewish observances. Christian feasts have related biblical roots, distinct meanings, and their own calendar calculations.
