Prayer Direction
Daniel prays with windows open toward Jerusalem (Daniel 6:10). Later synagogue orientation follows the direction of Jerusalem from its own location.

- The Old Testament does not provide a synagogue blueprint. This selective model illustrates later Jewish furnishings for study, not a reconstruction of an Old Testament building or a complete plan of any congregation. The central bimah and separate front amud reflect one Ashkenazi arrangement; Sephardic and other communities differ. The ark curtain and eternal light also vary by custom. A separate vestibule, full Torah library, and the mechitzah used in Orthodox Jewish congregations are not illustrated. Dimensions, stonework, columns, seating, and decorative profiles are schematic.
- Prayer has a direction (Historical connection): Solomon’s prayer speaks of prayer toward the Temple and Jerusalem. A synagogue’s prayer direction therefore depends on its location. Orthodox churches commonly turn toward liturgical east, understood in relation to Christ and His coming.
- These directions are not identical. The biblical tabernacle and this Temple model have an eastern entrance and inner sanctuary to the west; liturgical east in a church can differ from compass east.
