Jesus is crucified and dies
Jesus dies on the cross; the passion narratives connect his suffering, clothing, thirst, and pierced side with Israel's Scriptures.
Historical context
The cross gathers several independent scriptural uses. This map does not turn textual similarities into numerical probabilities or settle contested manuscript readings.
Tradition note
Begin with each Old Testament passage in context, then examine the New Testament's wording and argument. Explicit fulfillment citations, apostolic applications, and typological comparisons carry different kinds of evidence; Protestant approaches to particular passages vary.
Avoid overclaiming
Read each connected passage's original context and boundary. An ordered study of narrative phases, not a calendar to scale or a complete Gospel harmonization. Infancy follows Matthew's sequence, preparation and the final Jerusalem visit chiefly follow the synoptics, and repeated ministry activities are thematic clusters. Some links come from later apostolic teaching or an earlier saying about a later event; each explanation identifies that use. Exact birth and passion dates, Gospel ordering differences, and Daniel timetable calculations are not resolved here. The kingdom-teaching moment is a thematic cluster. Verse and chapter numbering can differ when comparing Hebrew, Septuagint, WEB, and NABRE editions; the tracker keeps WEB reference numbering and notes specific variants. Individual citations carry their own connection kinds even when a passage is used in different ways.
Key points
- The cross gathers several independent scriptural uses. This map does not turn textual similarities into numerical probabilities or settle contested manuscript readings.
- Abraham's blessing (New Testament application): Galatians 3:13–18 — Paul relates Christ's redemptive death to Abraham's blessing reaching the nations and identifies Christ as the promised offspring. His argument draws on the wider Genesis promise sequence.
- The suffering servant (Fulfillment citation): Luke 22:37 — Jesus' statement about his coming passion supplies the explicit fulfillment link to the suffering that ends in the cross.
- The suffering servant (New Testament application): Acts 8:32–35 — After Easter, Philip begins with Isaiah's suffering-servant passage and explains Jesus. This later application is grouped with the passion it interprets.
- The suffering servant (New Testament application): 1 Peter 2:21–25 — First Peter applies the servant's innocence, bearing of sins, and healing language to Christ's suffering, using several lines across Isaiah 53.
- Lament & garments (Fulfillment citation): John 19:23–24 — John explicitly says the soldiers' division of the garments and casting lots fulfill the Scripture.
- Zeal & passion (Fulfillment citation): John 19:28–30 — John's fulfillment statement, Jesus' thirst, and the sour wine form the connection; Psalm 69 supplies the related drink image.
- Zeal & passion (New Testament application): Romans 15:1–3 — Paul applies Psalm 69:9's reproach clause to Christ in teaching mutual care. This is a later application to Jesus' self-giving, not another narrated passion incident.
- Unbroken bones (Fulfillment citation): John 19:31–36 — John explicitly says the unbroken bones fulfill Scripture; this study follows the Passover-law connection while naming the other related texts.
- The pierced one (Fulfillment citation): John 19:34–37 — After the spear thrust, John adds a second scriptural citation about looking upon the one who was pierced.
- The lifted serpent (Typology & echoes): John 3:14–15 — In an earlier conversation with Nicodemus, Jesus says that the Son of Man must be lifted up as Moses lifted the serpent. This earlier saying interprets his later saving death and the life received through believing.
- Bread of life (Typology & echoes): John 6:48–51 — Earlier in his ministry, Jesus contrasts the ancestors who ate manna and died with the living bread he gives. His promise to give his flesh for the world's life is read here as a saying that points ahead to his self-giving death.
- Covenant blood (Typology & echoes): Hebrews 9:18–22 — In its later account of Christ's sacrifice, Hebrews quotes Moses' covenant-blood language and recalls the first covenant's inauguration. This is apostolic-era theological interpretation of Jesus' death, not a Gospel scene at the cross.
- Day of Atonement (Typology & echoes): Hebrews 9:7–14 — Hebrews recalls the high priest's yearly entry with blood, then contrasts it with Christ's offering of himself and the cleansing accomplished through his own blood. This later teaching interprets Jesus' saving death.
- Obedient offering (New Testament application): Hebrews 10:8–10 — Hebrews interprets doing God's will through the once-for-all offering of Jesus' body. This applies the psalm's obedience language to the meaning of his saving death.
- God-given children (New Testament application): Hebrews 2:11–18 — Hebrews uses words of trust and God-given children while explaining that Jesus shares flesh and blood with his brothers and sisters, suffers, and breaks death's enslaving power. This later application interprets his incarnate solidarity and saving death.
- Praise and human glory (New Testament application): Hebrews 2:5–9 — Hebrews quotes the psalm's human dignity and rule, then points to Jesus, who suffers death and is crowned with glory. This later reading interprets the path through suffering rather than adding words spoken at the crucifixion.
- The cursed tree (New Testament application): Galatians 3:13–14 — Paul quotes the tree curse while saying that Christ redeems others from the law's curse. He explains the crucifixion through that scriptural category and relates the redemption to Abraham's blessing reaching the nations.
- Into the Father's hands (New Testament application): Luke 23:44–46 — At his death, Jesus addresses the Father and entrusts his spirit into God's hands using the psalm's language. This is a narrated scriptural prayer on the cross, distinct from later apostolic explanations of the event.
- The good shepherd (Typology & echoes): John 10:11–18 — The same earlier teaching interprets Jesus' later death as the shepherd's willing self-giving for the sheep. This cross connection is a forward-looking saying, not a new discourse delivered while he is crucified.
Scripture
- John 19:16–37 — Jesus dies on the cross; the passion narratives connect his suffering, clothing, thirst, and pierced side with Israel's Scriptures.
- Genesis 22:15–18 — The New Testament identifies Jesus within Abraham's line and reads the promise of blessing for nations through Christ.
- Isaiah 53:1–12 — John identifies unbelief with Isaiah's report, Jesus applies the servant's being counted with transgressors to his passion, and later writers explain his saving suffering.
- Psalm 22:1–31 — The passion cites the sufferer's lament and divided garments; Hebrews also applies the psalm's later praise to Christ and his brothers and sisters.
- Psalm 69:1–36 — John and Paul reuse distinct lines of the sufferer's lament for Jesus' temple action, rejection, and passion.
- Exodus 12:43–46 — John connects Jesus' unbroken bones with a scriptural saying closely associated with the Passover lamb.
- Zechariah 12:10–14 — John connects the pierced side of Jesus with Zechariah's mourning over the pierced one.
- Numbers 21:4–9 — Jesus explicitly compares the serpent raised by Moses with the Son of Man being lifted up so believers may have life.
- Exodus 16:4–15 — Jesus recalls the wilderness manna and identifies himself as the Father's life-giving bread, surpassing the food that sustained Israel.
- Exodus 24:3–8 — The supper's covenant-blood language recalls Sinai, and Hebrews compares covenant inauguration through blood with Christ's saving work.
- Leviticus 16:1–34 — Hebrews contrasts the annual high-priestly rite with Jesus' once-for-all self-offering and entry into God's presence.
- Psalm 40:6–8 — Hebrews places the psalm's words of willing obedience on Christ's lips and relates them to his bodily self-offering.
- Isaiah 8:17–18 — Hebrews places Isaiah's words of trust and God-given children in its account of Jesus sharing humanity and overcoming death.
- Psalm 8:1–9 — Jesus appeals to the psalm's praise from children; Hebrews and Paul apply its account of human rule to Jesus' suffering, glory, and victory.
- Deuteronomy 21:22–23 — Paul applies the law concerning an exposed body on a tree to Christ's death and his redemption of others from the law's curse.
- Psalm 31:1–5 — Luke presents Jesus' final prayer using the psalmist's words of trust in God's hands.
- Ezekiel 34:11–24 — Jesus' good-shepherd teaching echoes God's promise to gather the neglected flock and provide one Davidic shepherd.
