Betrayal, arrest, and the scattered disciples
Jesus is betrayed and arrested while his disciples flee; he interprets the crisis through the shepherd and suffering-servant texts.
Historical context
The thirty pieces of silver and their later disposal belong to the betrayal sequence, although Matthew's fulfillment citation comes in 27:9–10 after the arrest.
Tradition note
Begin with each Old Testament passage in context, then examine the New Testament's wording and argument. Explicit fulfillment citations, apostolic applications, and typological comparisons carry different kinds of evidence; Protestant approaches to particular passages vary.
Avoid overclaiming
Read each connected passage's original context and boundary. An ordered study of narrative phases, not a calendar to scale or a complete Gospel harmonization. Infancy follows Matthew's sequence, preparation and the final Jerusalem visit chiefly follow the synoptics, and repeated ministry activities are thematic clusters. Some links come from later apostolic teaching or an earlier saying about a later event; each explanation identifies that use. Exact birth and passion dates, Gospel ordering differences, and Daniel timetable calculations are not resolved here. The kingdom-teaching moment is a thematic cluster. Verse and chapter numbering can differ when comparing Hebrew, Septuagint, WEB, and NABRE editions; the tracker keeps WEB reference numbering and notes specific variants. Individual citations carry their own connection kinds even when a passage is used in different ways.
Key points
- The thirty pieces of silver and their later disposal belong to the betrayal sequence, although Matthew's fulfillment citation comes in 27:9–10 after the arrest.
- Scattered disciples (Fulfillment citation): Matthew 26:31–32 — Jesus says the written shepherd-and-scattering saying explains the disciples' falling away that night, then promises to meet them after rising.
- Thirty pieces of silver (Fulfillment citation): Matthew 27:3–10 — Matthew expressly labels the disposal of Judas's betrayal money and purchase of the potter's field a fulfillment. It belongs to the betrayal's aftermath, not the moment of arrest itself.
- The suffering servant (Fulfillment citation): Luke 22:35–37 — Before the arrest, Jesus says the Scripture about being counted with transgressors must be fulfilled in him.
Scripture
- Matthew 26:31–56 — Jesus is betrayed and arrested while his disciples flee; he interprets the crisis through the shepherd and suffering-servant texts.
- Zechariah 13:7–9 — Jesus quotes the struck-shepherd saying before the disciples' flight.
- Zechariah 11:12–13 — Matthew relates the betrayal money and potter's field to prophetic Scripture.
- Isaiah 53:1–12 — John identifies unbelief with Isaiah's report, Jesus applies the servant's being counted with transgressors to his passion, and later writers explain his saving suffering.
