The Day of Atonement and the once-for-all offering

Jesus Prophecy Tracker · Source review: 2026-10-07

Hebrews contrasts the annual high-priestly rite with Jesus' once-for-all self-offering and entry into God's presence.

Historical context

Leviticus regulates the high priest's access to the inner sanctuary and the annual purification of the sanctuary and people. The rite includes sacrifices, blood rites, confession over a live goat, and a day of rest and self-humbling.

Tradition note

Begin with each Old Testament passage in context, then examine the New Testament's wording and argument. Explicit fulfillment citations, apostolic applications, and typological comparisons carry different kinds of evidence; Protestant approaches to particular passages vary.

Avoid overclaiming

The chapter first governs Israel's annual worship. Hebrews explicitly interprets that pattern through comparison and contrast with Christ; this is not an original dated prophecy. Jesus' death is not placed on the calendar's Day of Atonement by this argument. Every detail of both goats is not independently identified with Jesus in Hebrews 9.
