Christ judges. Our lives matter.

Doctrine Concept

Matthew 25 distinguishes eternal punishment and eternal life. Its account of judgment includes concrete mercy toward the hungry, the stranger, the sick, and the imprisoned. The OCA explanation retains judgment and punishment while rejecting the idea that God takes pleasure in cruelty.

Scripture

Primary sources

After the account of acts and omissions of mercy, Matthew concludes:

Matthew’s judgment scene distinguishes eternal punishment from eternal life.

These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.

— Gospel according to Matthew, Gospel according to Matthew (25:46), trans. World English Bible Classic

Passage context and translation
