Torah Scroll
The scroll contains the Five Books of Moses. The assembly listens to its reading; Nehemiah 8:8 emphasizes understanding what is read.
Perspective note
Comparative historical/source study. The original author's or church's reception is retained; inclusion does not make every claim Oriental Orthodox teaching.
Key points
- Hearing and learning the Torah shape communal life.
- Look for: An open scroll on the reading table.
- Illustrated location: Prayer & Torah Reading
- The Old Testament does not provide a synagogue blueprint. This selective model illustrates later Jewish furnishings for study, not a reconstruction of an Old Testament building or a complete plan of any congregation. The central bimah and separate front amud reflect one Ashkenazi arrangement; Sephardic and other communities differ. The ark curtain and eternal light also vary by custom. A separate vestibule, full Torah library, and the mechitzah used in Orthodox Jewish congregations are not illustrated. Dimensions, stonework, columns, seating, and decorative profiles are schematic.
- Torah, Gospel, and proclamation (Historical connection): The synagogue gathers around Torah reading; Luke records Jesus reading and teaching in a synagogue. In church, the Gospel Book is carried and proclaimed. Justin’s second-century account describes Christian readings followed by exhortation and common prayer.
- A Torah ark is a scroll cabinet, distinct from the biblical Ark of the Covenant. This comparison concerns proclamation and reverence for Scripture; Torah scrolls, covenant tablets, and the Gospel Book remain distinct.
