Vestry (Diakonikon)
The vestry, or diakonikon, stores sacred vessels, books, and vestments. In the arrangement described by this source it is on the south side, to the right as you face the Holy Table; a separate room is not universal.
Perspective note
Comparative historical/source study. The original author's or church's reception is retained; inclusion does not make every claim Oriental Orthodox teaching.
Key points
- Its practical order supports the careful service of the Church's worship.
- Look for: Storage or a preparation room on the sanctuary's south side.
- Illustrated location: Sanctuary / altar area
- Clothing set apart for worship (Orthodox reception): Exodus 28 describes garments set apart for priestly service. Orthodox vestments are also reserved for worship and receive biblical meanings in their prayers. Explore the vestry as the place where clergy prepare and vest.
- Christian vestments developed over centuries from several sources, including formal and imperial clothing. A symbolic parallel with an ephod or priestly turban does not establish direct descent of the sakkos or mitre.
