Isaiah's unheeded message and the response to Jesus

Jesus Prophecy Tracker · Source review: 2026-10-07

Matthew identifies Isaiah's words with hearers who fail to understand Jesus, and John uses the same oracle when reflecting on resistance to his signs.

Historical context

At Isaiah's commissioning, God sends the prophet to a people whose hearing and seeing do not lead to understanding and healing. The surrounding commission announces judgment while also leaving a remnant image after devastation.

Tradition note

Follow the unity of the incarnate Word's life and Israel's Scriptures, as read in the Church's worship and Christological tradition. The labels distinguish the New Testament's citations from broader applications and typology; original historical contexts remain visible.

Avoid overclaiming

The oracle belongs first to Isaiah's mission and Judah's judgment. The New Testament applies it to resistance encountered by Jesus. Neither Gospel passage should be generalized into a claim that all Jewish people rejected him or were incapable of faith; John 12:42 explicitly says many leaders believed. The languages of judgment, human response, and fulfillment require reading in their full arguments.
