The blood of the covenant

Jesus Prophecy Tracker · Source review: 2026-10-07

The supper's covenant-blood language recalls Sinai, and Hebrews compares covenant inauguration through blood with Christ's saving work.

Historical context

At Sinai the people affirm the covenant's words, Moses builds an altar and offers sacrifices, and blood is applied in the ceremony establishing the covenant between God and Israel.

Tradition note

Follow the unity of the incarnate Word's life and Israel's Scriptures, as read in the Church's worship and Christological tradition. The labels distinguish the New Testament's citations from broader applications and typology; original historical contexts remain visible.

Avoid overclaiming

Exodus describes the inauguration of the Sinai covenant, not a dated prediction of the last supper. The Gospel wording recalls that event, while Hebrews develops a theological comparison. Hebrews' retelling includes details beyond Exodus 24 alone; those details should not be silently imported into the original narrative.
