Named Protestant accounts of final punishment
The historic account shown here follows Augsburg XVII and Westminster XXXIII in affirming continuing punishment; Southern Baptist Faith and Message X likewise affirms everlasting punishment. Seventh-day Adventist Beliefs 26–27 instead teach conditional immortality: life is given to the redeemed, and the wicked are finally destroyed. They interpret the second death as permanent death, rather than endless conscious suffering. The Church of England Book of Common Prayer Athanasian Creed speaks of everlasting life and fire. The Wesleyan Church Articles 20–22 affirm conscious existence after death and lasting separation in hell. Assemblies of God (USA) affirms everlasting punishment and rejects annihilationism. These are the named sources shown by their dropdown options. Rethinking Hell presents another evangelical conditionalist account: the lost are raised and judged, then finally destroyed. Unlike the specifically Adventist account, its statement allows proponents to differ on consciousness between death and resurrection.
Scripture
- Matthew 25:46 — The historic confessions connect this distinction to everlasting life and punishment.
- Revelation 20:14-15 — Adventist teaching reads the second death as final destruction.
- Romans 6:23 — Death and the gift of eternal life in Christ are central to the conditional reading.
