Hell and purifying fire are distinct
The Catechism affirms hell's eternity and Jesus' warnings about fire. Its chief punishment is everlasting separation from God. God predestines no one to hell; the warning calls people to conversion (CCC 1033–1037). Purgatory's cleansing is entirely distinct from the punishment of hell (CCC 1031).
Scripture

- 1 Corinthians 3:15 — A saved person's purification must be distinguished from condemnation; cited in CCC 1031.
