Ecclesiastes

Biblical Writing · c. 3rd c. BCE

About this date: Dates are broad scholarly estimates of composition or final editing, not dates of the events narrated. Traditional attributions and scholarly assessments can differ.

Ecclesiastes tests achievement, wealth, labor, pleasure, and wisdom against mortality and the limits of human control. Qoheleth's searching voice and the closing epilogue should both be heard without turning every observation into an isolated doctrinal maxim.

Historical context

Qoheleth speaks through a royal persona associated with Solomon; that literary voice is not in itself an authorial signature. The Hebrew term often translated vanity has a range of contextual effects.
