Colossians
About this date: Dates are broad scholarly estimates of composition or final editing, not dates of the events narrated. Traditional attributions and scholarly assessments can differ.
Colossians proclaims Christ's primacy over creation and the church while urging a community to remain rooted in him. It responds to rival pressures without fully spelling out the opponents' teaching. Traditional Pauline attribution and modern debates about authorship should be kept distinct from the letter's own argument.
Key points
- The Christ hymn in chapter 1 belongs with reconciliation, not only cosmic status.
- The warning in chapter 2 is directed to a particular community situation that is only partly recoverable.
