Early Baptist congregations
About this date: 1609 is a common marker for an early congregation in Amsterdam; Baptist origins are more complex. Helwys's return is dated late 1611 or early 1612.
English Separatist exiles in Amsterdam, led by John Smyth, adopt believers' baptism around 1609. Thomas Helwys returns to London about 1612 with part of the group and argues that rulers may not coerce conscience. These congregations emphasize believers' baptism and religious liberty; later called General Baptists, they are distinct from the Calvinistic Particular Baptists, and Baptist traditions later diversify and spread globally.
