Preaching Stand
A transparent preaching stand occupies the center of the platform in this model. Pentecostal preaching draws on Scripture, while stand designs and positions vary.
Key points
- The preaching place directs attention to God's word proclaimed.
- Look for: A speaking stand positioned for the congregation to see and hear.
- An illustrative contemporary Pentecostal church informed by Assemblies of God teaching and ministry resources. Pentecostal churches differ widely in music, architecture, liturgy, and theology; chairs, bands, and screens are local choices also found in other traditions.
- The worship leaders and Communion area are at the top of this study plan. The model's front is a viewing direction rather than a required compass orientation. Furniture positions and building plans vary by congregation. The drawing is schematic: object sizes, materials, decorative details, and exact coordinates are illustrative rather than surveyed measurements or denominational requirements.
- Readings, thanksgiving, and care for neighbors (Historical connection): Justin describes Sunday readings from the apostles and prophets, an exhortation, common prayer, bread and wine with water, thanksgiving, Communion, and a collection for people in need. His account helps explain why proclamation, a table, the gathered assembly, and service to absent members belong together.
- Justin describes an order of worship, not the dimensions or furniture of a church. His account does not establish that a modern pulpit, high iconostasis, or complete later Byzantine rite was already present.
- A church order arranges readers, ministers, and people (Historical connection): This church order prescribes a long, east-oriented building, a bishop's seat with presbyters, deacons attending the assembly, a reader in a raised place, psalm responses, and standing for the Gospel. Its arrangement links proclamation, oversight, and the congregation's participation.
- Despite its title and apostolic speaking voices, this is a fourth-century pseudonymous compilation, not an eyewitness architectural instruction written by the apostles or Clement of Rome. Its instructions, including social seating divisions, describe a prescriptive ideal rather than universal practice.
