Beyond Jerusalem: Samaria and the Ethiopian official

New Testament Guide · first century; later reception identified separately · Samaria; the Jerusalem-Gaza road; the coastal towns

After Stephen's death, Acts follows scattered believers who proclaim the word beyond Jerusalem. Philip preaches in Samaria; Peter and John subsequently visit, pray, and lay hands on the believers. A second scene follows Philip to an Ethiopian court official reading Isaiah. Beginning with that Scripture, Philip announces Jesus and baptizes him. The two episodes show mission through both a community and a personal encounter.

Tradition note

Eastern Orthodox and Catholic interpretations connect the Samaritan laying on of hands with chrismation or confirmation. Protestant readings include exceptional apostolic authentication of the Samaritan mission and other accounts of receiving the Spirit. Acts 10 presents a different sequence, so Acts 8 should not be turned into an uncontested universal sequence.
