Pentecost: Scripture, Spirit, and shared life

New Testament Guide · first century; later reception identified separately · Jerusalem

Acts begins its outward movement in Jerusalem, not with a solitary missionary. At Pentecost, Jews and proselytes from many regions hear the wonders of God in their own languages. Peter stands with the Eleven and interprets the event through Joel and the Psalms, proclaiming Jesus' resurrection and exaltation. The narrative then joins baptism to teaching, fellowship, breaking bread, prayer, and material care.

Tradition note

Eastern Orthodox and Catholic readers commonly understand the breaking of bread here Eucharistically; Protestant interpretations vary. The community's teaching, prayer, and mutual care are explicit even where sacramental readings differ.
