Cornelius: the Spirit and the Gentile household

New Testament Guide · first century; later reception identified separately · Joppa and Caesarea Maritima

Acts interweaves Cornelius's summons from Caesarea with Peter's vision in Joppa. Peter enters the centurion's household, proclaims Jesus, and sees the Holy Spirit fall upon the hearers before he orders their baptism. The account continues in Jerusalem, where Peter must explain why he entered the house of uncircumcised people and ate with them. Acceptance is argued through God's action, not portrayed as instantly uncontroversial.
