Zeal, undeserved hatred, and sour wine
John and Paul reuse distinct lines of the sufferer's lament for Jesus' temple action, rejection, and passion.
Historical context
The psalmist laments reproach and hostile treatment, including unsuitable food and sour drink, and pleads for God's rescue.
Tradition note
Read the unity of Scripture in Christ while attending to the Old Testament's literal setting and the New Testament's use of it. Fulfillment can include a renewed historical pattern, not only an isolated prediction; this collection is a study guide rather than an exhaustive doctrinal catalogue.
Avoid overclaiming
John 19:28 invokes fulfillment without naming the exact psalm; Psalm 69:21 is a close sour-wine connection, while thirst also recalls Psalm 22. John 15:25 can reflect Psalm 69:4 or Psalm 35:19. John 2's temple action occurs early in that Gospel, while the synoptic confrontation occurs in the final Jerusalem visit. Particular applied lines do not transfer the psalmist's confession of folly or later curses to Jesus.
Key points
- Fulfillment citation + New Testament application
- John 19:28–30 (Fulfillment citation) — John's fulfillment statement, Jesus' thirst, and the sour wine form the connection; Psalm 69 supplies the related drink image.
- John 2:13–17 (New Testament application) — The disciples recall Psalm 69:9 during John's early temple action. It is an application within John's own sequence, grouped with the temple theme without dating it to Mark's final-week account.
- John 15:18–25 (Fulfillment citation) — In the farewell discourse Jesus describes undeserved hatred and says the written saying is fulfilled. Psalm 69:4 and Psalm 35:19 both contain that wording; this thread names the ambiguity.
- Romans 15:1–3 (New Testament application) — Paul applies Psalm 69:9's reproach clause to Christ in teaching mutual care. This is a later application to Jesus' self-giving, not another narrated passion incident.
