The psalm's gods and Jesus' scriptural defense

Jesus Prophecy Tracker · Source review: 2026-10-07

Jesus quotes the psalm's address to gods when answering a charge of blasphemy over his identity as the Son of God.

Historical context

God stands in judgment over those called gods because they fail to uphold justice for the weak and vulnerable. The psalm warns that they will die and concludes by asking God to judge the earth.

Perspective note

Comparative historical/source study. The original author's or church's reception is retained; inclusion does not make every claim Oriental Orthodox teaching.

Tradition note

Oriental Orthodox study: the eternal Word and life-giving Spirit are confessed within Nicene faith. These passage connections distinguish original context, New Testament use and later Christian interpretation. Historical witnesses retain their own church reception; a proposed interpretation is not automatically a universal Oriental teaching.

Avoid overclaiming

Interpretations of the original assembly include divine beings and human rulers or judges. Jesus uses the wording in a scriptural argument, not as a prediction of a particular event or a declaration that every human is equivalent to God. His question about the one consecrated and sent by the Father should be read with the surrounding claims and works.
