Mercy rather than empty sacrifice

Jesus Prophecy Tracker · Source review: 2026-10-07

Jesus quotes Hosea's call for covenant mercy when defending his welcome of sinners and his disciples' conduct on the Sabbath.

Historical context

God addresses Ephraim and Judah because their loyalty vanishes like morning mist. The prophetic rebuke contrasts faithful knowledge of God and covenant loyalty with sacrifices offered without that faithfulness.

Perspective note

Comparative historical/source study. The original author's or church's reception is retained; inclusion does not make every claim Oriental Orthodox teaching.

Tradition note

Oriental Orthodox study: the eternal Word and life-giving Spirit are confessed within Nicene faith. These passage connections distinguish original context, New Testament use and later Christian interpretation. Historical witnesses retain their own church reception; a proposed interpretation is not automatically a universal Oriental teaching.

Avoid overclaiming

Hosea 6:6 is a moral and covenantal rebuke, not a dated prediction of these conversations. Jesus applies it to disputes over mercy. The statement should not be turned into a denial that Israel's Scriptures contain legitimate worship and sacrifice. This study does not use Hosea 6:2's third-day language as a separate resurrection prediction.
