Elijah's widow and the reach of God's mercy
Jesus cites Elijah's mission to the widow of Zarephath when confronting expectations about whom God's prophet will serve.
Historical context
During the drought, God sends Elijah to a widow in Zarephath. She receives him despite desperate scarcity, and her flour and oil continue to provide food in accordance with the prophetic word.
Perspective note
Comparative historical/source study. The original author's or church's reception is retained; inclusion does not make every claim Oriental Orthodox teaching.
Tradition note
Oriental Orthodox study: the eternal Word and life-giving Spirit are confessed within Nicene faith. These passage connections distinguish original context, New Testament use and later Christian interpretation. Historical witnesses retain their own church reception; a proposed interpretation is not automatically a universal Oriental teaching.
Avoid overclaiming
Luke records Jesus applying a past prophetic episode to the reach of God's mercy and to his own reception. It is not a claim that he repeats every detail of Elijah's visit or that Kings directly predicted the Nazareth conversation. Luke's placement of the Nazareth scene at the opening of ministry differs from related Gospel ordering.
