John prepares the way in Elijah's role

Jesus Prophecy Tracker · Source review: 2026-10-07

Jesus identifies John with the expected Elijah, while Luke describes John's work in Elijah's spirit and power.

Historical context

Malachi closes with a summons to remember Moses' law and a promise of Elijah before the day of the LORD, turning family hearts toward one another.

Perspective note

Comparative historical/source study. The original author's or church's reception is retained; inclusion does not make every claim Oriental Orthodox teaching.

Tradition note

Oriental Orthodox study: the eternal Word and life-giving Spirit are confessed within Nicene faith. These passage connections distinguish original context, New Testament use and later Christian interpretation. Historical witnesses retain their own church reception; a proposed interpretation is not automatically a universal Oriental teaching.

Avoid overclaiming

Many Hebrew and Catholic editions number these lines as Malachi 3:23–24. Luke's description concerns Elijah's spirit and power, not reincarnation; John 1:21 records John's denial that he is Elijah, which must be read alongside the Synoptic identification.
