Death's defeated sting

Jesus Prophecy Tracker · Source review: 2026-10-07

Paul reuses Hosea's death-and-Sheol language in his proclamation of the future resurrection victory grounded in Jesus Christ.

Historical context

Hosea announces judgment against Ephraim for accumulated guilt. The surrounding images portray peril and failed deliverance. Verse 14 is translated either with statements about ransom or with rhetorical questions and a summons to death, so its function must be read within that judgment context.

Perspective note

Comparative historical/source study. The original author's or church's reception is retained; inclusion does not make every claim Oriental Orthodox teaching.

Tradition note

Oriental Orthodox study: the eternal Word and life-giving Spirit are confessed within Nicene faith. These passage connections distinguish original context, New Testament use and later Christian interpretation. Historical witnesses retain their own church reception; a proposed interpretation is not automatically a universal Oriental teaching.

Avoid overclaiming

Paul's triumphant use should not be treated as proof that Hosea's original oracle was an uncomplicated Easter prediction. Translations and interpretations of Hosea 13:14 differ, especially over whether God refuses rescue in this setting. First Corinthians describes death's final defeat when the dead are raised and transformed; that future consequence is not already completed for everyone at Jesus' resurrection.
