Living Protestant Faith

Formation Module

Christian learning continues in a local church through Scripture, worship, prayer, baptism and the Lord's Supper, mutual care, and service. Protestant communities differ in membership processes, pastoral oversight, and the place of confessions, so concrete next steps belong to the chosen church. The goal is sustained discipleship in Christ rather than completion of a generic course.

Why it matters

A broad path becomes useful when it leads to a real community and a workable pattern of life.

Historical context

No single membership process covers Lutheran, Anglican, Reformed, Baptist, Methodist, Pentecostal, and independent churches. The path therefore ends with denominational sources and local guidance rather than a universal rite of entry.

Pastoral note

This is a broad learning path. Ask a particular church about its confession, worship, membership, and preparation practices.

Scripture

Primary sources

Augustine writes:

Augustine's prayer gives a shared ancient witness that formation is ordered toward rest in God, not course completion alone.

You have made us for Yourself, and our hearts are restless until they rest in You.

— Augustine of Hippo, Confessions (Book 1, Chapter 1, Section 1), trans. J.G. Pilkington

Passage context and translation

Augustine begins the Confessions as prayer. The line belongs to an invocation about created humanity's desire to praise and seek God, not a detached observation about psychology.

Before the excerpt

You move us to delight in praising You

After the excerpt

Lord, teach me to know and understand which of these should be first: to call on You, or to praise You

Pilkington translation in Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers, First Series, Volume 1; the linked edition also prints the Latin phrase cor nostrum inquietum est donec requiescat in Te.
