Why are people shown who were not at the event?
An icon may present the event together with its theological meaning; it must explain that visual grammar rather than claim photographic reporting.
Key points
- Paul appears in Ascension or Pentecost icons although he was not present then. Other details are absent from the biblical narrative. Isn't that inaccurate?
- The transcript's example distinguishes historical narrative from a composition representing the whole apostolic Church.
- A symbolic arrangement can teach a true relationship without asserting that every figure physically stood there at that moment. The image should make this level of meaning intelligible.
- This does not allow arbitrary fantasy or replace history with myth. Mark received typology and liturgical interpretation distinctly from facts directly stated in Scripture.
- A learner may reasonably misunderstand the composition. Provide an accessible explanation and sources; do not make obscurity a sign of spiritual sophistication.
