Is the Eucharist the only image Christ authorized?
Orthodoxy distinguishes a sacramental gift from a pictorial likeness; one need not replace the other.
Key points
- Christ gave bread and wine as his memorial. A painted icon adds a competing material image of him.
- The Byzantine iconoclast argument gave the Eucharist a privileged role as Christ's legitimate image.
- The iconophile reply does not turn a painted panel into Eucharistic flesh and blood. An icon identifies and recalls; the Eucharist is received sacramentally as Christ's body and blood.
- A unique sacramental gift does not logically prove that every other truthful representation is forbidden. But the mere existence of the sacrament also does not automatically authorize every image.
- Avoid the transcript's broad language that the Eucharist, icons, Scripture, and relics are 'the exact same thing'. Their relation to God and their church use differ.
