Why bow and kiss if this is not worship?
A gesture gets its meaning from its recipient, purpose, and setting; Orthodox teaching reserves divine worship for God.
Perspective note
Comparative historical/source study. The original author's or church's reception is retained; inclusion does not make every claim Oriental Orthodox teaching.
Key points
- Bowing, kissing, incense, and lamps look like worship. A distinction in someone's mind cannot simply change a religious act.
- The bodily action matters, but its meaning cannot be identified from posture alone. People can bow in respect without declaring someone a god.
- In Orthodox practice, an icon is honored because of the person represented. It is not an independent recipient of divine service.
- Intention is not the only safeguard: the image, prayers, theology, and communal practice must also be truthful. Sincere intention does not make a false cult legitimate.
- Some Protestants distinguish civil honor from religious devotion and still reject the latter toward saints. Answer that stronger distinction rather than only pointing to everyday bows.
