Are only Byzantine flat paintings legitimate?
A medium is not automatically an idol. Orthodox liturgical tradition has strong preferences and theological disciplines, with historical variation.
Key points
- If the Church's case is true, why should style or two dimensions matter? Are statues, reliefs, and Western images inherently idolatrous?
- Nicaea II speaks of images in different suitable materials; its decree is not a blanket ban on every three-dimensional artwork.
- The Orthodox preference for icons and reliefs rather than a church full of naturalistic statues reflects its received liturgical language.
- Style must serve truthful theology, prayer, and the whole sacred space. Do not reduce legitimacy to a single school or claim every Western sacred image is pagan.
- Local pastoral and canonical direction still matters. Permission in principle does not require every parish to adopt every medium or composition.
