Read the prohibition and the permission
Read the whole biblical pattern: idols are forbidden, cherubim are commanded, and a once-legitimate bronze serpent can become an idol.
Key points
- The boundary: Exodus 20 excludes rival gods and idolatrous service. This command remains binding.
- The distinction: Exodus 25 and the temple describe sacred imagery. Therefore not every crafted likeness is intrinsically an idol.
- The warning: The golden calf and Nehushtan show that intention or sacred origins do not make every religious use legitimate.
- The cherubim answer a total ban on sacred art. They do not, by themselves, prove the entire Orthodox practice.
