Learn to read an icon
Look at the person, inscription, gesture, and biblical scene. Traditional iconography teaches through composition; it need not function like a modern photograph.
Key points
- Identify: Read the title and identify the subject. Distinguish Christ, his Mother, saints, and a narrative scene.
- Observe: A book, a cross, a blessing, or a gesture directs attention to a recognizable confession or story.
- Interpret carefully: Separate what the image visibly contains from a later symbolic reading. Some conventions vary by region and period.
- Use the gallery's object-specific notes and provenance. An ancient icon is evidence of its own period, not a photograph of the first century.
