Build an answer that survives a follow-up
Begin with the strongest form of the objection, state your premise, then give a bounded answer with a source the other person can inspect.
Key points
- Concede what is true: Yes: God forbids idolatry, images can be abused, and early evidence does not all say the same thing.
- Make the distinction: Permissible representation, honor of the depicted person, and an ecclesial duty to venerate are distinct claims.
- Show the bridge: Explain why the Incarnation, received practice, and council authority together persuade the Orthodox Church; name which premise your critic rejects.
- A defense can be clear and confident while acknowledging where a dispute depends on authority or historical interpretation.
