Presbyterian polity

Doctrine Branch

Reformed presbyterian churches govern through graded councils of elders rather than a historic episcopate.

Why it matters

This branch belongs to Church & Ministry: The marks of Word and sacrament, the priesthood of all believers, ordained ministry, discipline, and local membership receive different institutional expression.

Historical context

Reformation churches revised medieval Western structures; national churches, free churches, revival movements, and global networks multiplied later forms.

Tradition note

Protestantism has no single worldwide teaching office. This map distinguishes major confessional families and cannot represent every independent church.

Memory hook

One confessed Church; several incompatible polities.

Ignatius of Antioch is a source witness for this study: Apostolic teaching, office, and communion.

See that you all follow the bishop, even as Jesus Christ does the Father, and the presbytery as you would the apostles; and reverence the deacons, as being the institution of God. Let no man do anything connected with the Church without the bishop. Let that be deemed a proper Eucharist, which is [administered] either by the bishop, or by one to whom he has entrusted it. Wherever the bishop shall appear, there let the multitude [of the people] also be; even as, wherever Jesus Christ is, there is the Catholic Church.

— St. Ignatius of Antioch, Epistle to the Smyrnaeans (Chapter 8), trans. Alexander Roberts and James Donaldson edition

Passage context and translation

Ignatius connects visible ecclesial unity and the Eucharistic assembly with the bishop.

Before the excerpt

But avoid all divisions, as the beginning of evils.

After the excerpt

It is not lawful without the bishop either to baptize or to celebrate a love-feast

Roberts and Donaldson translation in Ante-Nicene Fathers, Volume 1; the displayed paragraph is from Smyrnaeans 8, and 'Catholic Church' here names the Church as a whole in Ignatius's second-century setting.
