Two natures

Doctrine Branch

Christ's divinity and humanity remain complete and distinct in their union in one hypostasis.

Why it matters

This branch belongs to Christ & Theotokos: The title Theotokos protects the unity of Christ, and the saving significance of every part of human nature depends on its being assumed by the Word.

Historical context

Ephesus, Chalcedon, and Constantinople III supply the conciliar grammar received in Orthodox Christology.

Tradition note

This is a Chalcedonian Eastern Orthodox introduction. Local usages vary among autocephalous churches.

Memory hook

One Christ, fully God and fully human, without confusion or separation.

Gregory of Nazianzus is a source witness for this study: A complete humanity, not a divine disguise.

For that which He has not assumed He has not healed; but that which is united to His Godhead is also saved.

— St. Gregory the Theologian, Letters: To Cledonius the Priest Against Apollinarius (Epistle 101), trans. Charles Gordon Browne and James Edward Swallow

Passage context and translation

Gregory rejects Apollinarianism by insisting that the Word assumed the fullness of human nature, including a human mind.

Before the excerpt

If anyone has put his trust in Him as a Man without a human mind, he is really bereft of mind, and quite unworthy of salvation.

After the excerpt

If only half Adam fell, then that which Christ assumes and saves may be half also; but if the whole of his nature fell, it must be united to the whole nature of Him that was begotten, and so be saved as a whole.
