The Word was God

Divine Identity · Source review: 2026-10-07

John both distinguishes the Word from God by saying with God and predicates God of the Word. Verse 14 links this Word to the incarnate life; verse 17 names Jesus Christ.

Historical context

The prologue places the Word before creation, credits all created things to him, then describes the Word becoming flesh.

Reception

Direct wording

Tradition note

The shared Nicene confession and the unity of Scripture guide this reading: the eternal Son is true God and truly human, distinct from the Father. Preserve original contexts, literary connections, and genuine textual questions; a theological conclusion can be firm even when one supporting passage is debated.

Avoid overclaiming

This entry has no paired Old Testament source. Theological inference labels the doctrinal synthesis, not the explicitness of John’s words. John 1:18 has God/Son textual variants and should not be cited without that qualification.

Strongest alternative reading

A competing reading treats the Word as God’s wisdom or self-expression personified until it becomes embodied in Jesus. Another takes God qualitatively as divine but lesser than the Father.
