Another Counselor, sent by the Father

Divine Identity · Source review: 2026-10-07

The wording distinguishes the one speaking, the Father addressed, and the Counselor given. The Spirit remains with the disciples, teaches, and reminds them of Jesus’ words.

Historical context

Jesus promises the disciples continuing help and presence after his departure, and identifies the Counselor as the Holy Spirit.

Reception

Essential context

Tradition note

The shared Nicene Protestant confession receives the Holy Spirit as Lord and giver of life, personally distinct from the Father and Son. Compare each passage’s wording and context with the whole scriptural pattern; giftedness and powerful effects alone do not establish deity or personality. Serious non-Nicene alternatives are argument checks, not a claim that all Protestant traditions read identically.

Avoid overclaiming

Sending in the saving mission should not be treated as a complete definition of eternal procession. This shared study does not use the passage to settle later differences between Eastern and Western formulations.

Strongest alternative reading

A competing reading understands the Counselor as personification of God’s helping power or the returning presence of the risen Jesus. Verse 18, ‘I will come to you,’ can support close identification of Jesus’ presence with the promised Spirit.
