Lying to the Holy Spirit, lying to God

Divine Identity · Source review: 2026-10-07

The parallel is explicit within two adjacent verses. Verse 9 also describes the couple as testing the Spirit of the Lord.

Historical context

Peter confronts Ananias about a false claim concerning a voluntary gift. He first names the Holy Spirit as the one deceived, then calls the same act lying to God.

Reception

Direct wording

Tradition note

The shared Nicene confession receives the Holy Spirit as Lord and giver of life, personally distinct from the Father and Son. Read the Spirit’s divine speech, indwelling, and life-giving work together with his relational mission. This collection does not resolve Eastern and Western differences about eternal procession.

Avoid overclaiming

Peter’s wording is an identification through a narrative parallel, not the standalone sentence ‘the Holy Spirit is God.’ Do not turn the judgment into a rule that every sin or withholding of property brings immediate death; verse 4 says the property and proceeds remained Ananias’s own.

Strongest alternative reading

A competing reading takes the Spirit as God’s active presence or power in the apostles. To deceive God’s Spirit-bearing representatives is to deceive God, just as rejecting a commissioned messenger can count as rejecting the sender without making the messenger God.
