Before Abraham was, I AM

Divine Identity · Source review: 2026-10-07

Jesus makes an extraordinary claim in a dispute about Abraham, using an unqualified I am after before Abraham came into existence.

Historical context

God answers Moses’ question about the name of Israel’s deliverer. Verse 15 also gives the enduring name Yahweh. Jesus contrasts Abraham’s coming into existence with his own I AM; his hearers then pick up stones.

Reception

Debated reading

Tradition note

The shared Nicene confession identifies the Son as true God while distinguishing him from the Father and confessing his real incarnation. Read the scriptural pattern as a whole, including worship, creation, and the Son’s human life; this study does not make every proposed allusion equally certain.

Avoid overclaiming

Stoning alone does not prove that the narrator endorses every accusation. The WEB capitalizes I AM as a translator’s choice; the Greek does not supply modern English capitals.

Strongest alternative reading

A competing reading understands the phrase as preexistence without full deity, or the Messiah’s prior place in God’s purpose. I am can also be ordinary identification; Exodus’ Greek wording is not an exact match.
