All authority and the one baptismal name

Divine Identity · Source review: 2026-10-07

Jesus joins the Father and Holy Spirit in the singular baptismal name, claims authority in heaven and earth, and promises continuing presence.

Historical context

The risen Jesus receives the disciples’ homage, declares universal authority given to him, and commissions baptism and teaching for all nations.

Reception

Cumulative case

Tradition note

The shared Nicene confession and the unity of Scripture guide this reading: the eternal Son is true God and truly human, distinct from the Father. Preserve original contexts, literary connections, and genuine textual questions; a theological conclusion can be firm even when one supporting passage is debated.

Avoid overclaiming

The formula distinguishes Father, Son, and Spirit. It neither spells out later council terminology nor justifies calling the Son the Father.

Strongest alternative reading

A competing reading emphasizes that authority is given to Jesus and reads the threefold formula as shared mission or allegiance rather than equality of divine being. Singular name does not by itself supply a technical ontology.
