Cornelius of Caesarea

New Testament Witness · first century; later reception identified separately · Caesarea Maritima

Acts describes Cornelius as a centurion of the Italian cohort, devout and God-fearing with his household, generous in almsgiving, and constant in prayer. He sends for Peter, gathers relatives and friends, and hears the proclamation of Jesus. His household's reception of the Spirit becomes a central part of Peter's defense of Gentile inclusion.

Why it matters

Cornelius's story connects the mission to a Gentile household while showing that acceptance required explanation within the Jerusalem community.
