Christophanies: a guide to reading

Christophanies · Scripture excerpt audit: 2026-10-07; research expansion: 2026-10-22

Explore Old Testament encounters associated with the eternal Son. Read the text, trace Christian interpretation, and weigh what each passage establishes.

Tradition note

Read the encounters through the eternal Word's revelation and the Church's Christological reading of Israel's Scriptures. Patristic witnesses are named individually; their interpretations and the symbolism of Abraham's hospitality are not identical in every source.

Avoid overclaiming

A broad curated collection of major and marginal candidates, with divine-presence scenes, types, and prophecies for comparison. There is no universally agreed list of Old Testament Christophanies. Classic means an influential or well-grounded reading, not unanimous identification. Context does not propose an identified appearance of Christ. Wisdom and Baruch are labeled broader-canon studies, reflecting different Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant reception.
