Glory in the cloud before the manna

Christophanies · Scripture excerpt audit: 2026-10-07; research expansion: 2026-10-22

Yahweh's glory appears to the hungry congregation as bread and meat are promised in the wilderness.

Reception

Debated identification

Tradition note

Begin with each passage in context and weigh the New Testament's explicit links before inferred identifications. Christian interpreters differ on how broadly to identify the angel of the LORD with the Son; the messenger's title alone does not settle every case.

Avoid overclaiming

Manna's fulfillment in Christ does not by itself identify the cloud as a personal appearance of the Son. Augustine accepts a divine manifestation through visible signs while declining to assign this passage to one person of the Trinity. Keep the food's typology and the glory's identification as separate questions.

Passage context and translation
