John the Baptist's death in two narratives

Church History · Late 20s or early 30s CE; uncertain · Machaerus, east of the Dead Sea

About this date: 30 is a reading-map anchor, not an established execution year. Josephus recalls John's death while discussing Antipas's later defeat by Aretas; that narrative position does not date the execution to the battle.

Mark and Josephus both associate John's death with Herod Antipas, but explain the circumstances differently. Josephus names Machaerus and emphasizes the ruler's fear of John's influence over the crowds.

Historical context

Mark tells the story through John's criticism of a marriage, Herodias's hostility, and a banquet. Josephus places John within his account of Antipas and Nabataean king Aretas.
