The Judean famine under Claudius

Church History · Mid-to-late 40s CE; approximate window · Judea, especially Jerusalem

About this date: Josephus places the famine under the procurators Cuspius Fadus and Tiberius Julius Alexander. The 44–48 window represents those administrations; it does not establish unbroken famine in every year or across the entire empire.

Josephus reports a severe famine in Judea during Claudius's reign. Eusebius places it beside Acts's account of Agabus and the Antioch relief mission.

Historical context

The accounts connect Jerusalem to wider supply networks: grain comes from Egypt and figs from Cyprus in Josephus's relief story. Acts describes aid traveling from Antioch to Judean believers.
