Council of Constantinople (879–880)
About this date: Its later ecumenical status and interpretation are disputed across traditions; do not label it simply an eighth ecumenical council.
With papal legates present, the council confirmed Photios, who had returned to the patriarchal throne in 877; annulled the earlier condemnations; affirmed the Creed without the Filioque; and recognized Nicaea II as the Seventh Ecumenical Council.
