Jerusalem

Church Center · Apostolic age; honor recognized in 325 · Jerusalem / ancient Aelia Capitolina

About this date: The map's approximate 30 cue refers to the apostolic period, not the foundation of Jerusalem. Acts 15 is commonly placed around 48-49, but Acts supplies no calendar year. Nicaea I, canon 7, preserves Jerusalem's honor while protecting the metropolis's rights; it does not describe a fully formed five-patriarch system.

Jerusalem is the starting point of the mission in Acts, the home of the community gathered at Pentecost, and the setting of the apostolic deliberation over Gentile believers. Its apostolic importance preceded its later patriarchal jurisdiction: honor, metropolitan rights, and apostolic memory did not all develop at the same time.

Historical context

The apostolic church, the Roman refounding as Aelia Capitolina, the fourth-century pilgrimage city, and the later patriarchate belong to different historical layers. Nicaea's canons are evidence for fourth-century ecclesiastical arrangements, not a transcript of first-century government.
