Western Schism (1378–1417)

Timeline Event · 1378–1417 CE · Western Europe

About this date: This was a resolved late-medieval schism within the Western Church, not a continuing modern communion and not the earlier East–West rupture. Some supporters of the remaining Avignon claimant persisted after 1417, but the main division ended with Martin V's election.

Disputed papal elections divided much of Latin Christianity between Roman and Avignonese obediences, later joined by a Pisan claimant. The Council of Constance and the election of Martin V restored broad unity in 1417.
