Adult Breastfeeding

Hadith Argument Dossier

Sahih Muslim reports Muhammad instructing Sahla to nurse the adult Salim so that he would become unmarriageable kin and could enter the household. Aisha appealed to the episode more broadly; the other wives rejected that extension and treated it as a concession specific to Salim.

Why it matters

The lazy attack says 'Islam commands women to breastfeed grown men.' The lazy defense says 'nothing happened.' The actual canonical problem is narrower and stronger: an extraordinary instruction is preserved, and Muhammad's own wives disagree about its legal scope.

Debate question

What in the prophetic wording makes this unique to Salim, and why did Aisha apply the precedent differently from the other wives?

Muslim reply

The episode solved Salim's exceptional pre-existing household status. The majority of Companions and jurists restricted it to him; milk could be expressed into a vessel, so direct breast contact need not be imagined.

Avoid overclaiming

Do not say Islamic law generally orders adult men to suck directly from women's breasts. The sound pressure point is the exceptional command and conflicting legal reception.

Suckle him. She said: How can I suckle him as he is a grown-up man?
